Sukhsagar Restaurant

The brief from the client was to create a clean, functional and lively environment for a vegetarian family restaurant in Ahmednagar. The restaurant belonged to one of the oldest and renowned family of confectioners and restaurateurs in town. The building also had to accommodate a large banquet hall on the first floor for parties, family functions or corporate events.

The site is located strategically in a busy area and had access roads on two sides which was an advantage as the entry of customers and the entry of services and goods could be seperated. The building plan had an outdoor area in front with two air-conditioned halls served from a kitchen alongside. An open counter between the outside seating and the air-conditioned halls had snacks, juices and other fast food items for quick service. Since Ahmednagar had a relatively hot weather, the outdoor area was planned with a fabricated roof on top with the sides open for free flow of air. The compound wall was deliberately kept high with planters all around with a lot of vegetation to give the feel of being in the middle of a garden. A separate straight flight staircase led to the banquet hall on top which was also connected to the kitchen by a compact staircase from behind.

The interior styling was very tropical in nature with the use of ochre and green shades, earthy colours, sandstone cladding, bottle green subway tiles placed in a herringbone pattern, earthy textures, etc.,. The use of glass and minimal teak-wood sleek partitions brought in warmth and a modern sophistication apart from visually connecting all the spaces. Wooden chairs, light wood-finish strip ceiling, woven cane pendant lights and mosaic patterned flooring strips add to the bohemian feel to the spaces. Overall a bright, cheerful but casual-contemporary feel was achieved to the overall ambience of the restaurant.
