The task at hand was to create a studio for our own architectural firm out of a 1 BHK apartment. The main idea for the layout emerged from the existing plan and its inherent restrictions. We were faced with two major constraints. The first was due to the main door placement in one corner and a staggered plan configuration; we realised that an entire chunk of space was being wasted in circulation when a linear plan was worked out. The second problem was a column in the middle of the space . Both these issues were solved by incorporating a 3 ft wide diagonal path linking the entry point to the final destination point carving out the main cabin space, a conference area and a staff area. The corner triangle housed a small pantry and a toilet, with a reception and waiting bench behind.
The space presented us with an opportunity of creating an internal street. Due to the angle created, we could work out interesting wall elevations - one side was a grooved panelling and frosted glass sliding doors and the other side meandered from a textured wall to a bright orange enclosure to a full height mirror accentuating the length of the corridor.
Minimalism, clean lines and functionality were the core parameters kept in mind while designing all the furniture. A 4 inches (100mm) flowing black band was used everywhere as a constant theme in the furniture. This band floated as a bench and turned up to become a receptionist table. It ran as a work top for the principal architects in the main cabin. Many corners and nooks created by the angular geometry became excellent storage spaces . Other interesting ideas used were “the tree skylight”, thin cudappah walls, multi-use furniture for the conference, etc.,
This office design was awarded the IIID Anchor Awards 2013 (Regional) Runner-up Small Workplaces Category.
